Over 2,000 people from the gaming industry are calling for an end to harassing and hateful speech from the video game community.
An open letter, written by Andreas Zecher of independent studio Spaces of Play, has attracted supported by over 2,000 people from high profile studios such as Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, BioWare, Infinity Ward, Crystal Dynamics, Sony, Microsoft and many more.
It currently has been signed by 2118 and continues to climb.
“We believe that everyone, no matter what gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion or disability has the right to play games, criticize games and make games without getting harassed or threatened,” wrote Zecher.
“It is the diversity of our community that allows game to flourish. If you see threats of violence or harm in comments on [social media] please take a minute to report them on the respective sites.”
Zecher called for gamers themselves to stand up and fight against hateful speech towards game developers.
According to CVG, Anita Sarkeesian, a games essayist who examines women roles in video games, was forced to leave her home due to increasing threats from anonymous critics of her work.
Her work has been praised by game industry figures such as Tim Schafer and Neil Druckmann.
