Colin Trevorrow discusses Jurassic World Plot Details

After a bunch of rather spoilery plot details for Jurassic World were leaked onto the net last week, fans of the franchise have been working themselves into a dino fuelled frenzy. Director Colin Trevorrow bit the bullet and gave an e-mail interview to Slashfilm concerning the leak, and his vision for the fourth Jurassic movie.

Understandably, Trevorrow ain’t too happy that details of the film were leaked ahead of time.

‘When I was a kid, you got to discover everything at once, it washed over you and blew your mind,’ he says. ‘Now it only takes one person to spoil it for everyone else. I hope whoever leaked it is actively trying to undermine what we’re doing. Because if they’re trying to help, they’re doing it wrong.’

Anyone who wishes to know nothing whatever of Jurassic World before they sit down to it at the cinema would be well advised to look away now…

Jurassic World will take place in a fully functioning dino park on Isla Nublar (the island from the first film). And by fully functioning, we mean the whole enchilada; a luxury resort, restaurants, a golf course, you name it. ‘It’s the realisation of John Hammond’s dream, and I think you’ll want to go there,’ says Trevorrow. 

The film will be set 22 years after the first Jurassic Park. The desire to make a quick (and large) buck, plus a sharp decline in wondering at the miracles of science and nature, have created a world where dinosaurs are yesterday’s news. ‘We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass,’ Trevorrow explains. ‘For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. ‘We’ve seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?’ Next year, you’ll see our answer.’

Chris Pratt’s character will be on the island to do some behavioral research on our old favourites the Velociraptors, but we will also be seeing a new dinsosaur which has been created by the park’s geneticists.

‘The gaps in her sequence were filled with DNA from other species, much like the genome in the first film was completed with frog DNA.’ says Trevorrow. ‘This creation exists to fulfill a corporate mandate – they want something bigger, louder, with more teeth. And that’s what they get. I know the idea of a modified dinosaur put a lot of fans on red alert, and I understand it. But we aren’t doing anything here that [Michael] Crichton didn’t suggest in his novels. This animal is not a mutant freak.’

‘Maybe it sounds crazy,’ he goes on to say, ‘but most of my favorite movies sound crazy when you describe them in a single sentence.’

All in all, Trevorrow assures us that the filmmakers are ‘trying to tell a bold new story….Will this one be different from the other movies? You bet it will. And I’m not going to pass the buck if it doesn’t work. This one’s on me.’

Jurassic World is filming now, and will hit our screens on June 12th 2015.
