The movie stars and filmmakers of this world gathered in London last night to attend The British Academy of Film and Television Awards. Getting the show underway with his opening monologue was host for the ninth time, Stephen Fry. It was a tame – rarely funny – introduction, but Fry’s charm rarely fails to win you over and he managed to force a kiss for the camera from heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio (something he did last year with Brad Pitt) and generate considerable laughter from the audience when he mentioned that Helen Mirren had come with her grandson: Prince William. It was kept short, the highlight being a plea to keep award speeches short with a quintessentially British metaphor of tea: “you would not thank the kettle, or the cup, or the cow”. The awards were then quickly given and here are the winners:
