[dropcap]T[/dropcap]che original version of Rainbow Six: Patriots was abandoned because it was “not good enough”, according to a Ubisoft executive.
Speaking to IGN, Ubisoft North America president Laurent Detoc, spoke about how the original version of the next installment in Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six video game franchise had to be remade after the company’s editorial group decided the game was not good enough.
He said: “We had a core team. They had a good vision. They got started, and then the game wasn’t working. So [they had] to start again. There’s an editorial group in Ubisoft, a big group, very influential. If the game is not good enough, they say it’s not good enough. Most of the time, the team will say, ‘yeah, I know.’ But sometimes they want to continue in a direction where you say, ‘no, it’s not going to work.’”
Rainbow Six: Patriots was announced back in 2011 and is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, Red Storm and Toronto. The game’s story follows the Rainbow Six team as they head to New York City to fight terrorists calling themselves the “True Patriots”.
The game is to be released for the PS4 and Xbox One. Detoc said that Patriots will benefit from the power of the next generation consoles. “Now they’re going to have the benefit of the new consoles, if and when [Rainbow Six: Patriots] comes out,” he said. “It’s one of those examples where you try, it doesn’t work, you try again. If it doesn’t work, we’re not going to bring it to you.”
According to Detoc, the game may also change its name between now and when it releases.
The previous installment, Rainbow Six: Vegas 2, released in 2008 and was critically acclaimed. Tom Clancy, author of the Rainbow Six books that spawned the video game franchise, died in October, aged 66.
