[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he British Independent Film Awards took place on Sunday evening, hosted by James Nesbitt at The Old Billingsgate Market.
Big winners of the evening included James McAvoy, winning Best Actor for his starring role in the adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Filth, and Lindsay Duncan, receiving Best Actress for Le Week-End. Imogen Poots and Ben Mendelsohn each won a trophy for their supporting roles in The Look of Love and Starred Up.
Sean Ellis picked up the award for Best Director for Metro Manila, which also won Best Film and Best Achievement in Production. The drama, set in the Phillippines, tells the story of a criminal underworld running in the city.
The biggest winner of the night was Julie Walters, who scooped the Richard Harris award for outstanding contribution to British cinema. Walters’ Harry Potter co-star Jason Issacs presented her with the gong.
Other winners included the documentary Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer and Blue Is The Warmest Colour.
