[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he next installment in the iconic Star Wars space opera franchise has been pushed back to December 18, 2015.
Directed by J.J Abrams (who showed off his sci-fi credentials when directing both films in the newly re-furbished Star Trek franchise), Star Wars: Episode VII was set to be released in the summer of the same year. Regarding the pushed back release date, Alan Horn, Chairman of the Walt Disney Studios, said that it would “ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture”.
This will be great news to many fans ears. Although it inevitably means we all have longer to wait, this comes after concerns were expressed about the apparent lack of time given to Abrams. It was believed that more time would be needed to ensure that the production is not rushed, their is less pressure and the the production team could produce the best possible outcome. Walt Disney Studios, who bought the rights to the franchise when swapping £2.5bn ($4.05bn) for Lucasfilm, appeared to have listened by granting Abrams that extra bit of time.
In regards to this, Abrams said it puts them in “an infinitely better situation”. Naturally, as a fan of the original films, Abrams is only interested in creating the best Star Wars trilogy possible and avoiding the mistakes of George Lucas‘ prequels. He continues: ” I think that it’s a hugely important thing that [the creative process] come first. A release date is great, but you have to release something great. To me, the new release date is a huge improvement.”
Ever since the world exploded to the news that Disney will be producing a new trilogy, the fans and media have been speculating about every potential plot or casting rumour under the sun (or should I say, two suns?). Other than this new release date, the only confirmed piece of information regarding the film comes from recent confirmation that R2-D2 will once again sweep across frame. Despite months of speculation, original stars Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are still unconfirmed.
Pre-production seems to be well underway and filming will commence on the hugely anticipated sequel next year at Pinewood studios in the UK.
