[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t was announced last week that the hyped-up adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey has been set back, after some casting issues. Although women everywhere were widely anticipating the film’s debut in August 2014, unfortunately they will have to wait a few more months to see the novel on the big screen, with the new release date set for Valentine’s Day weekend 2015.
This is yet another set back in the film’s production, as just a few weeks ago, Pacific Rim actor Charlie Hunnam dropped out of his role as Christian Grey, to be replaced by The Fall’s Jamie Dornan. Dornan will star alongside The Social Network’s Dakota Johnson. Universal were expected to delay after the casting problems were revealed.
50 Shades of Grey became a huge hit in 2011, telling the tale of how graduate Anastasia Steele is seduced by multi-millionaire Christian Grey. The erotic story and bondage scenes became a housewives favourite and soon became a best seller.
E.L. James’ novel will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, director of the 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy. Nowhere Boy is Taylor-Johnson’s only feature film to date, but the director is notably excited about the project, and promises to ‘honour the power of Erika’s book and the characters of Christian and Anastasia. They are under my skin too.’
