A trailer has been released for George Clooney’s new film set during World War 2, The Monuments Men is a comedy drama based on the exploits of the Monuments, Fine Arts and Archives Program during the war. The allied outfit was given the task of recovering precious works of art that were confiscated by the Nazis and due to be destroyed. George Clooney stars in this film about the men who joined the program which he also co-wrote, produced and directed. The film also stars Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman and Jean Dujardin.
The amazing true story was also the subject of a book written by Robert M. Edsel and called The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History.
George Clooney plays George Stout, a member of the program who recruits a crew of Art historians and museum curators to steal the precious artworks back from the Nazis. Stout only has eight men in his crew and they are all older men with no training or combat experience. The group have to make it through basic training and then attempt to outfox the Nazis in order to complete their mission. The film will have plenty of humour as the old guys try to muddle their way through the mission but there will also be lots of drama too.
The plot is a unique twist on the caper film as the men are trying to save treasures and take them back from those who stole them. In some ways the plot is similar to John Frankenheimer’s The Train with Burt Lancaster, in that film old Burt single-handedly hijacked a train full of precious Artworks in an attempt to save them from the Nazis. That story was also based on real life events which were chronicled in a book by Rose Valland.
Real life tales of heroic deeds during wartime are inspiring and always popular at the cinema. Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded of all the good things people did through history to save the day and fight against oppressors.
The trailer for The Monuments Men is funny and it gives the viewer a chance to see great character actors like John Goodman in a military uniform for a change. The plot is explained in an amusing scene where Clooney tries to convince Damon’s character that the mission can actually work and be a success. The other actors are then shown in various fish out of water scenarios where their inexperience and old age make things difficult for them. Cate Blanchett’s character appears to be a European local woman who helps the men with their mission. Good music can really help a trailer stand out and Kiss The Sky by Shawn Lee’s Ping Pong Orchestra is used to great effect as the action is shown on screen. The song is a classic and all about triumphing over adversity which is perfect for the film. The excellent cast and interesting subject matter make this an intriguing trailer with a good message about the importance of preserving history and culture.
The film will be released on January 9th so have a look at the trailer and share your thoughts.
