Captain Kirk has always been a bit of a maverick. In some ways he is quite similar to Han Solo as both characters can be loose cannons and reckless. This aspect of Kirk’s personality was explored in J.J. Abrams first Star Trek movie (released in 2009) and it gets him in trouble in this new teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness. Kirk is warned by Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) that being so reckless can endanger the lives of his crew. He is a risk taker who often makes it up as he goes along and this character trait leads to some hair-raising situations as shown in the trailer.
The crew of the Enterprise face off against a new enemy rumoured to be Khan (played by Benedict Cumberbatch.) Khan is a classic villain in the Star Trek universe and he first appeared in the original Star Trek TV show. He perhaps became most famous when he appeared in the feature film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan released in 1982 where the character was played by Ricardo Montalban. Khan Noonien Singh was a genetically engineered super soldier from the 20th century. He was put into cryosleep and revived by the crew of the Enterprise in 2267. He then tried to take over the ship until he was thwarted by Captain Kirk. Khan’s motive in the new film is not clear as the trailers avoid giving way too many spoilers. He is shown launching a terrorist attack in London which provokes Kirk and his crew to try and stop him.
The trailer is full of action as Kirk is seen flying through space with jets on his space suit and chasing Khan in some kind of light aircraft. Most of the cast members also return in the sequel including Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Simon Pegg as Scotty. So far all the trailers have only shown Khan in brief glimpses and very little is known about him. That is a good thing as it avoids too many spoilers and leaves an air of mystery surrounding the character. No one really even knows who the villain is as his identity remains a secret. The theory that he is actually Khan is pure speculation.
The action in the trailer may remind the viewer of Star Wars as the set pieces involving space battles are directed in a similar style. Kirk even makes a reference to Han Solo when he utters the infamous line “punch it.” That is a line of dialogue Solo often said before activating the Millenium Falcon light speed module.
Star Trek Into Darkness looks like it may turn out to be even better than the first movie. Fans of the genre can catch the film at the cinema when it is released on May 17th.
