Robert Downey Jr has swooped in and obtained the rights to an episode of Channel 4’s Black Mirror, snatching them from under George Clooney’s nose. The show originally aired in 2011 and has recently returned with a much acclaimed new series on the same channel. The first series most definitely caught the eye of Downey Jr, who wasted little time in mobilising his troops to purchase the rights to the episode entitled The Entire History of You, by Peep Show writer Jesse Armstrong, which centres on a time when human memories are stored on memory chips.
Armstrong has spoken about selling the rights to the US, telling The Independent “I thought we’d done a great version here so it would be interesting to see what could be done in the US.”Armstrong went on to confirm that the US version will be a “whole new story” with Downey Jr taking the lead in producing with his company Team Downey, which he runs with his wife Susan.
Of course, with Downey Jr being involved in the production, inevitable questions will arise about the possibility of him starring. At the moment, everything that he does turns to blockbuster gold, with the sequel to Avengers Assemble and of course Iron Man 3 on their way, you would be hard pressed to find a more ‘in form’ actor right now.
With the futuristic theme, Black Mirror is well suited to the type of role that he is currently famous for and although the story will be changing slightly, he could be the perfect man for the job. In the original, the lead uses his memory chip to uncover his wife’s duplicity and expose her affair, but Hollywood does like to give us some schmaltz, so in this version the protagonist will be reliving his time with his dead wife, all the while uncovering a conspiracy. All in a day’s work.
