Technical Artist explains Rainbow Six: Patriots cancellation

Rainbow Six: Patriots for old-gen consoles “just didn’t work”, an artist who worked on the game has said.

Technical Artist, Oliver Couture, was recently interviewed by Rock, Paper, Shotgun and he discussed why the originally planned release of Rainbow Six: Patriots was cancelled and instead placed with the new Rainbow Six: Siege, which was announced during Ubisoft’s E3 conference last week.

“To be completely transparent, I worked on Patriots – On Rainbow Six for three-and-a-half years – and Patriots was old gen,” he said.

“Next-gen consoles were just around the corner, and we were like, ‘Ok, we want to also have a next-gen experience. What can we do for that?’ We were trying stuff out with destruction technology, and we realized destruction really changes the game. We tried to see how it could fit with old-gen, but it just didn’t work out.

“So for us it was just a better solution to clean the slate, reset, and make what’s best for the players. We’ve been working hard for the past year-and-a-half [on Siege].”

For the first time in the series, players will engage in sieges whilst the Rainbow Six team lead the assault to breach the enemy’s position. Enemies can use reinforced walls and floors, use barbed wire, deployable shields and mines.

It is to be released in 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
