[dropcap]A[/dropcap]ussie Joel Edgerton has garnered much acclaim in recent years after screen stealing turns in the likes of Warrior, The Great Gatsby, Zero Dark Thirty and the terrific Animal Kingdom. So then, it comes as no surprise to hear he is set to join Indie darling Jeff Nichols’ latest film, which is being touted as a “contemporary-set, Sci-fi chase movie”.
Nichols, of course, is the maverick director behind the sumptuous Mud, Take Shelter and feature debut Shotgun Stories. The director, talking to Empire back in May, says of his own work, “I like working in genre and subverting it – I think each of my films has been a genre film that you dismantle – and I’m trying to do the same thing here. I’m putting the focus on the characters, rather than the genre elements.” His latest looks set to follow in this trend, although little is known about it at this point.
If Edgerton signs on (and he’d be a fool not to) he will join frequent Nichols muse Michael Shannon. Shannon’s career has lifted off of late with his acclaimed turn as Man of Steel’s Zod. Tele-fans may also know him as the erratic Agent Nelson Van Alden in HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.
The movie has been picked up by Warner Bros which means it will be Nichols’ first foray into studio backed cinema. Production is planned commence early next year.
Let’s hope this project proves any easier task for Edgerton who is currently attached to two troubled pictures. The 39-year-old is to star in both indie-western Jane Got a Gun, which has seen the likes of Michael Fassbender, Jude Law and director Lynne Ramsey drop out, and Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass, which Johnny Depp has recently left.
