George R. R. Martin, writer of A Song of Ice and Fire (the series of novels upon which Game of Thrones is based) has revealed that the HBO series could eventually move onto the big screen. The writer suggested that the show could be rounded off with a feature length film, or that more films could be made based on other stories which are also set in the GOT universe.

Speaking with the Hollywood Reporter, Martin said ‘It all depends on how long the main series runs…Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

Martin has also revealed another possibility being considered, which is that a film (or films) could be based on Tales of Dunk and Egg, a series of three novellas he has written which are set around 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, involving the character Ser Duncan the Tall as well as characters who, Martin has said, are direct ancestors of some Game of Thrones characters.

The fourth season of Game of Thrones is just about to get going, and so far the series has only covered the events of the first two and a half of Martin’s books (in fact, Martin hasn’t even finished writing all the novels yet), so the writer is getting a tad ahead of himself here. Game of Thrones is a sweepingly epic universe of almost Tolkienesque proportions, so there is a lot of scope for both the big and small screens. As long as the dragons keep getting bigger, we’ll keep on watching.
