It’s been over 3 years since Grand Theft Auto V launched to phenomenal success, both financially and critically, but that hasn’t stopped the open-world adventure title from earning yet another accolade to its already astonishing catalogue of records and awards.

The Ukie GFK Chartrack data today revealed that GTA V has sold over 6 million copies of the game in the UK alone since launching in September 2013.

Over £240 million has been put through British tills since its launch, making it the biggest contributor to the British economy than any other single gaming title in history.

“The UK games sector is a global success story,” said Dr Jo Twist OBE, CEO of Ukie.

“We are a comparatively young industry punching far above our weight on the international playing field, and Grand Theft Auto V is a prime example of how UK teams are creating hugely successful, globally renowned titles that are making a valuable contribution to the UK’s reputation as games makers, our economy, job creation, and cultural identity.”

GTA V launched on September 17th, 2013, and quickly became the biggest entertainment launch in history, earning $800 million during its first 24 hours on sale.

2 days later it officially broke $1 billion in sales, beating major films such as The Avenger’s Assemble and Avatar.

Critically acclaimed worldwide, the BAFTA award winning title also out-sold GTA IV, beat The Last of Us as the biggest digital release on PlayStation, broke 7 Guinness World Records and won numerous Game of the Year awards.

The game would later go on to be re-released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

As of November 2nd, 2016, Grand Theft Auto V has shipped over 70 million copies across all platforms.
