The record breaking game beat stiff competition from Naughty Dog’s hit PS3 exclusive title The Last of Us, placed 2nd, and Bioshock Infinite, placed 3rd.
Critically acclaimed worldwide, Grand Theft Auto V launched on September 17th and quickly became the biggest launch in entertainment history. It broke $1 billion in just three days, outsold its predecessor GTA IV, beat The Last of Us as the biggest digital release on the PS3 and broke an astonishing 7 Guinness World Records.
However it wasn’t a disappointment for the critically acclaimed apocalyptic thriller Last of Us. Whilst losing to GTA for Game of the Year, it was awarded as the Best Newcomer and Best Storytelling. Its developers, Naughty Dog, were also presented with the Best Studio award.
Bioshock Infinite also gained recognition, being awarded for Best Visual Design whilst its creator, Ken Levine, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Upon accepting his award, Ken thanked the fans of the game, his family and Take Two interactive.
The recently delayed Watch Dogs lost out on the Most Wanted award which went to The Witch 3 instead.
The Call of Duty franchise was also present at the ceremony and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Call of Duty has broken many records and was one of the fastest selling franchises thanks to recent releases such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.
A further instalment in the franchise, Call of Duty: Ghosts, releases in November.
