The Best Offer is an intriguing new drama directed by Giuseppe Tornatore who is perhaps best known for Cinema Paradiso.
The film stars Geoffrey Rush as an expert antiques dealer called Virgil Oldman who appears to live a fairly solitary existence. He spends most of his time working and doesn’t appear to have much interest in socializing or relationships. Things change however when a reclusive young heiress called Claire offers Oldman a job to evaluate some rare works of art at her estate. Oldman accepts the job and is surprised to learn that his client is agoraphobic and never shows her face to anyone. He finds Claire interesting and a relationship starts to form between the pair as they spend more time together. When Claire does eventually reveal herself to Oldman she is beautiful and he is smitten. He becomes obsessed with Claire and this leads him on a roller coaster ride involving both love and deceit.
Rush appears to be on top form in the trailer and he is supported by a good cast including Jim Sturgess, Donald Sutherland and Sylvia Hoeks who plays Claire. It is also nice to see a film set in the art world which is a fascinating subject matter. Viewers may see some similarities between The Best Offer and Danny Boyle’s Trance as both movies involve relationships, art and deception. The trailer contains a nice blend of mystery and drama as Oldman slowly becomes infatuated with Claire who awakens feelings in him such as lust, love and obsession. It also hints that Oldman is a bit crooked and involved in a scam to acquire rare paintings for a cheap price.
Fans interested in the movie should look out for it as it is scheduled for an early 2014 release in certain countries. Check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
