Gareth Edwards knows how to direct a good monster movie, his directorial debut, Monsters was made on a shoestring budget yet boasted great special effects, good acting performances and an element of mystery as the creatures in the film were not fully understood. Now Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros have wisely decided to let him direct their hotly anticipated Godzilla reboot. The results are impressive so far as the trailer is very entertaining and mysterious.
Not much is known about the plot but to be fair all viewers need to know is that a huge monster is rampaging through a city. The director described Godzilla as a “terrifying force of nature” which is an interesting way of looking at the creature. No doubt the film will also have plenty of human drama and its cast is impressive. Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn and the underrated Ken Watanabe will all appear in the film.
The trailer is very ominous and dramatic which makes it gripping to watch. A squad of paratroopers are given an inspirational speech by their commanding officer before leaping out of a plane and free falling through dark and cloudy skies. As they descend it becomes clear they are heading towards a city on fire and the viewer knows Godzilla will be in there somewhere wreaking havoc. As the soldiers parachute into the danger zone the trailer switches to a nice first-person view which shows what one of the soldiers is seeing through his goggles. His heavy breathing can also be heard and the viewer shares his fears. Towards the end of the trailer some of the city dwellers are also shown trying to deal with all the chaos ensuing around them.
It’s a great trailer which uses atmosphere and tension to good effect while avoiding an over-reliance on special effects. This lets the viewer use their imagination to conjure up images of what Godzilla will look like when it appears. The creature itself is not revealed in detail so fans eager to watch the film will have to wait to get a good look at the monster.
Godzilla is due out on May 16th, 2014 so check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
