The Raid was a fairly successful Indonesian martial arts film directed by Gareth Evans and starring newcomer Iko Uwais. The actor played a
rookie cop called Rama who took part in a raid on a tower block controlled by vicious gangsters. Now a trailer has been released for The Raid 2: Berandal and it is not for the faint of heart.

In this sequel, Rama (played again by Iko Uwais) is sent to a prison in Jakarta as part of an undercover police operation. His mission is to infiltrate the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family. He also has to uncover the corruption in his own police force. Gareth Evans wanted to set the first movie in a prison and make a film about gangs behind bars but he didn’t have the funding for it. He decided to make a smaller movie instead and thus The Raid: Redemption was born. Due to the films’ success Evans was able to secure funding for his prison movie which is now the sequel to Redemption.

The previous film was well known for its outstanding martial arts choreography but also its brutality. When characters fought in The Raid: Redemption it was always no holds barred and vicious. Bones were broken and limbs were often hacked off so each fight was a battle to the death. Berandal retains that gritty tone and it looks even more brutal than its predecessor. The trailer contains plenty of savage beat downs and is very well edited. It also utilizes an innovative concept as Rama is shown shadow boxing in his cell while scenes from the film are rapidly intercut with his training routine, this technique makes the trailer quite intense and fast paced. Berandal should contain plenty of high-octane set pieces and expert choreography so action buffs will not be disappointed.

Fans of martial arts action can catch the film when it is released sometime in 2014. Check out the trailer and share your thoughts.
