The Theory of Everything
The Theory of Everything film Review
The Theory of Everything is a biographical drama film directed by James Marsh, starring Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables) and Felicity Jones (The Amazing Spiderman 2), portraying an emotional and outstanding representation of a relationship between the world famous physicist Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane Hawking. This astonishing love story tells of a man diagnosed with motor neurone disease who falls for a student (Jones). Together they defy all expectations and boundaries, allowing Hawking (Redmayne) to discover and create his most memorable scientific work – The Theory of Everything – based around what he fights so tirelessly against: time.
Redmayne’s outstanding performance shows the complex and intricately perfected portrayal of Hawking from a young age, through the emotionally exhausting journey both Hawking and Jane embarked upon together, creating an extraordinary insight into the interesting life of one of the world’s greatest scientific minds. Redmayne manages to convey the humanity and warmth of his character in the most challenging of circumstances, enhancing the love and passionate devotion of the on-screen relationship between himself and Jones.
Jones’s excellent portrayal of a loyal and devoted wife, who battles with Hawking against all the odds, captivates with a heartfelt performance. But not all relationships have happy endings; the realistic strain on their relationship allows us to experience the legitimate complexities and struggles involved. Even through this hardship and new found love experienced by both Stephen and Jane Hawking, the film still conveys their unconditional love and friendship for each other, bound together by their unforgettable journey.
This remarkable film has swept its audience of their collective feet with a truly outstanding and touching story – a real achievement for director Marsh who has created such a memorable and successful movie. The film received four Golden Globe Award nominations, with Redmayne winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a motion picture drama. This is certainly his year, as he stars in the next blockbuster film Jupiter Ascending, alongside Mila Kunis who is famously known for Black Swan and Friends with Benefits, as well as Channing Tatum (Magic Mike).
The Theory of Everything truly is a film worth watching, and will touch your hearts as it has many others – I promise it will have you reaching for the tissues!
