film Review

A teaser trailer for the new Star Wars film is finally online, offering viewers a nice sneak peek at some of the characters.

The trailer is narrated by a sinister voice, and it opens with an establishing shot of sand dunes on what appears to be Tattooine, home planet of the Skywalker clan. The identity of the narrator is unclear, but rumours state that it could be the voice of either Adam Driver or Benedict Cumberbatch; the latter’s involvement in the film has yet to be confirmed though.

John Boyega (from Attack the Block) then appears in the trailer from below camera wearing a stormtrooper uniform; his character is rumoured to be a good guy with a troubled past. Viewers will also catch a glimpse of Daisy Ridley’s heroine character, Oscar Issacs as a rebel alliance pilot and a Sith lord whose face is not shown.

The teaser is a real treat for fans of the series as it has lightsabers, X wings, Tie Fighters and, of course, the Millenium Falcon – the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy. John Williams’ iconic Star Wars theme is used to great effect as is to be expected, but it’s also a feast for the ears because it has great music, a good voice-over narration, great sound effects for the lightsaber, a chattering imperial probe droid and various vehicles shown throughout the trailer. The Star Wars films have always had amazing sound design and that tradition seems to continue here.

Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Kenny Baker, Anthony Daniels and Peter Mayhew are all in the film, but they don’t appear in the trailer surprisingly. The supporting cast also includes Max Von Sydow, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong’o, Warwick Davis and Domnhall Gleeson. J.J. Abrams and his crew have done a good job of keeping schtum about the plot and some of the characters; it is unclear what roles some of the actors will be playing and not much is known about the story right now.

It’s a good teaser trailer which will will give fans of the series plenty to talk about. Fans eager to use the force can catch the movie when it is released on December 18th, 2015. Check out the trailer, share your thoughts and beware the dark side!
