Anyone not living under a rock should know that the next Star Wars movie (not including The Last Jedi which hits screens this December) will be a continuation of the Star Wars: Anthology series. Following the success of last year’s Rogue One, audiences are going to be treated to a stand alone film focused on everyone’s favourite smuggler Han Solo.
Now, whilst Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One was a success for its style and tone (moving away from the Jedi-orientated fantasy towards a war movie), the Han Solo film is looking to try and deliver a Western-style theme to it. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (see 2014’s Lego Movie and 21/22 Jump Street), the tonal shift looks to be an exciting one.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Gareth Edwards said: “They’re amazing filmmakers. I’m very excited about what they do. It’ll be a completely different film to what we did. I think they’ve got the hardest task, I think, out of all the films that I heard about that one is probably the greatest challenge and they’re gonna knock it out of the park, but I wouldn’t have had the balls to do that.
“They’ve got really good taste. You glimpse things – you try not to – as you’re going about your business, but you see stuff. And everything I saw, I got really jealous about it.”
Personally, I do not hold high hopes for Han Solo, just because I think time could be better spent on other characters from the universe, but that isn’t to say it won’t be a good film. With the team up of Miller and Lord, we should be getting a funny and exciting adventure…watch this space.
