In a world full of sequels, there is one that most movie-goers would admit to wanting to see, and that’s Ghostbusters 3, which has just acquired the services of Bridesmaids pair Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy.

It’s no secret that this latest instalment will feature an all-female ghostbusting crew, with director Paul Feig having tweeted that Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, of Saturday Night Live fame, will also be on board, which should do the wise-cracking tradition of the Ghostbusters franchise more than proud.

As Feig, who was also the director of Bridesmaids, said himself: “It’s a shame to just let this thing sit there. My favourite thing to do is work with funny women. I was like, what if it was an all-female cast? That would be really fun.” However, it’s only since it became apparent that certain members of the original cast and crew weren’t going to have the same involvement as before that this path was taken.

Notoriously difficult to pin down, Bill Murray was as elusive as ever. Ivan Reitman, who looked set for so long to reprise his role in the director’s chair, said that Murray “never actually said no, but he never said yes.” It was the untimely passing of Harold Ramis last year that changed Reitman’s own mind, although he will still be on hand for production duties. Meanwhile, Dan Aykroyd has been helping out with the script.

One thing fans can rest assured of is that the location will remain the same. ‘I love this city!’ is a line uttered by Ernie Hudson during the closing scene of the original, a sentiment which Feig obviously shares: “To me it’s such a New York movie, and the biggest sin of all would be to pull it out of there. I just love New York, and selfishly, I just want to shoot in New York.”

And finally, what of Stay-Puft and Slimer? Modern computer imagery could, no doubt, have a lot of fun with those two, as well as all the other spooks and spectres, but we should know what it’s all about by July 2016.
