Gareth Edwards, director of Monsters and the latest box office smashing Godzilla movie, has now been revealed as director of the first of many planned Star Wars spinoffs.
Earlier this month Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed that the plan was to make at least three spinoff films and release them inbetween instalments from the main series, meaning that we will see our first spinoff in cinemas in December 2016. The spinoffs are apparently being written and produced by Simon Kinberg (of X Men fame) and Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Raiders of the Lost Ark).
Gareth Edwards says:
“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honoured to go on this mission with Lucasfilm.”
As of yet, we don’t know which of the rumoured spinoffs Edwards has been assigned to direct. There has been talk of films focusing on the bounty hunter Boba Fett and space bum Han Solo, Jedi Master Yoda, and also Luke Skywalker. The spinoff that has been the most talked about so far is Boba Fett’s, so at the moment our money would be on that one to show up first.
It has also just been announced that a sequel to Godzilla is already in the works, so it’s going to be a busy few years for Edwards if he returns to direct that too (which seems likely). The first of the new main Star Wars films has just begun shooting under the direction of J J Abrams, and will be in UK cinemas on December 18th 2015.
