Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton has signed up to rewrite, direct and produce the long-awaited Morgan Creek biopic of rapper/actor Tupac Shakur, which has been stuck in development hell for a number of years.

Singleton’s name was first mentioned with a view to directing in 2012 after Antoine Fuqua pulled out, but nary a move was made to get the project underway. However, Singleton has now officially signed up to helm the film, and he would seem to be a pretty good choice, seeing as he actually directed Shakur in Poetic Justice and has become close with his family since the rapper’s death.

Singleton is currently working on the script, and plans are in place to begin production in June this year. The biopic does not have a title yet, nor does it have a star. Morgan Creek held an open casting call for the lead role, but this did not yield a good result, and was probably the root cause of Fuqua dropping out as director.

So the next big question is, who will play Tupac? If the production’s June start date is to hold true, the casting agents are going to have to get a wriggle on. More news as we get it.
