[dropcap]N[/dropcap]ew rumours about Star Wars Episode VII seem to appear every week. The latest one is that Disney, Lucasfilm and Bad Robot productions have put out a UK casting call for a 7 ft to 7.3 ft tall slim male actor to play a role in the new film.
According to Den of Geek, this information comes from a reliable source and has also led to speculation that the new casting call is for a Wookie character such as Chewbacca. Chewie was Han Solo’s sidekick, and also a pretty good first mate on the Millenium Falcon ship they used for smuggling. The two likeable rogues met Luke Skywalker and joined the rebellion against the evil Empire.
Wookies are very tall in the Star Wars films and Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the original trilogy, was also over 7 ft tall himself. Mayhew appeared again as the character in Episode III, but the actor has sadly suffered from health and mobility issues recently. If the studios are looking to bring back Chewie, it’s unlikely Mayhew would be able to perform the role due to his poor health. This could explain why the studios are looking for a replacement actor instead of casting Mayhew.
It’s also entirely possible that the casting call is for a completely different character; the rumour is pure speculation and the Star Wars universe has numerous tall alien races. The role could even be for a different Wookie character instead of Chewbacca. However, it would be nice to see Chewie return, as he is a great character and popular with fans of the films.
