[dropcap]M[/dropcap]el Gibson. The name used to be synonymous with box office success. In recent times however, his reputation has been somewhat sullied by his actions off screen. Now he is rumoured to be back in the genre that made his name, but this time he is not set to be the hero that saves the day with a witty quip, nor is he down to play the anti-hero, forced into action against his will. No, this time he is allegedly going to be the dastardly bad guy who goes up against Sly Stallone and his rugged all-action mercenaries in The Expendables 3.
There hasn’t been any official confirmation, but if the rumours are indeed true, Gibson will be following in the footsteps of the Coors-drinking muscles from Brussels Jean-Claude Van Damme, who hammed up the screen in the previous outing. There have been other confirmations however; Jackie Chan has signed on, as well as Resident Evil alumni Mila Jovovic, who will be reuniting with her Fifth Element co-star Bruce Willis along with series stalwarts Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham, Jet Li, and not to mention Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Nicholas Cage is also stepping away from his usual one man on a mission shtick to be a part of the ensemble piece. All will add their special brand of action to the sequel, but it is Gibson that most would be interested to see. Where he was once a huge box office draw, his star has now declined so much that many see working with him as a huge gamble. However, this franchise is a happy hunting ground for those whose careers have seen better days. Others that are rumoured to have signed up are Wesley Snipes and Steven “I’m just a cook” Segal. Gibson had previously turned down a chance to direct the film, Stallone had revealed on Twitter. Was that so he could be in front of the camera?
As this Expendables news hits the headlines, it reminds us at The Farm that we haven’t had much news lately about the Female Expendables, or the Expendabelles, as they had been christened. There were rumours a plenty late last year with Gina Carano putting pen to paper, but not much has happened since for the Adi Shankar vehicle. Katie Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica fame is also on board, but the project seems to have stalled in recent times. Maybe no news is good news. Maybe not.
