We take a look at cinema’s best lines – can you guess what will be number one?
10. ‘Yippee-kai-yay Motherfucker’
John McClane (Bruce Willis) – Die Hard
Willis’s grubby-vested McClane captured audience attention when he managed to beat a bunch of terrorists headed by Alan Rickman back in 1988. Serving the line in true action-hero style, it proved such a hit that Willis served the line in every Die Hard sequel.
9. ‘Frankly, my dear, I don’t given a damn’
Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) – Gone With the Wind
Ouch. Spurning the pleas of Scarlett O’Hara, Gable’s simple line blends insult and pride perfectly. Said with 1930’s swagger, the line has echoed itself through Hollywood’s history ever since the film’s release in 1939.
8. ‘My precious!’
Gollum (Andy Serkis) – Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Gollum’s raspy love for Tolkien’s infamous ring endeared him to countless viewers. Despite his unpredictability, his loyalty to the ring stayed true. Bless.
7. ‘Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she had to walk into mine’
Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) – Casablanca
Humphrey Bogart suffers unenviable bad luck when old flame Isla (Ingrid Bergman) appears in his Casablanca bar. When it was first released in 1942 no-one involved anticipated the film’s success… its surprise popularity has meant much of it’s dialogue has gained iconic status, including Bergman’s often misquoted ‘play it Sam’ and Bogart’s ‘here’s looking at you, kid’.
6. ‘Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get’
Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) – Forrest Gump
Simpleton Gump aptly sums up the nature of life in this Zemeckis’s 1994 film. By rights, Tom Hanks could easily fill this entire list having served countless iconic lines in his acting career. After all the man bought Houston the damning news that his team had a problem, he lost his best friend Wilson and had to convince another that they were just a toy.
5. ‘Here’s Johnny!’
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) – The Shining
It may have been recycled from a popular phrase on The Tonight Show but Jack Nicholson’s rendition of this now infamous line is undoubtedly the more famous of the two. After spending gruelling hours filming Kubrick’s terrifying scene, Nicholson’s insanity is palpable and captured brilliantly with this ad-lib.
4. ‘I’ll be back’
The Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) – The Terminator
… and boy, he wasn’t lying. A film that spurned sequel after sequel (as well as a prequel and a television series), The Terminator bought us Schwarzenegger’s robotic villain intent on killing Sarah Connor before she could give birth to future rebel leader John Connor. Not exactly the guy you want hot on your trail, his promise of return would be sure to strike fear in the heart of anyone.
3. ‘E.T. phone home’
E.T. (Pat Welsh) – E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
After being stranded on Earth, Extra-Terrestrial E.T. befriends young boy Elliott. Growing increasingly unwell, his desperate attempts to send a distress signal home results in this famous line as well as Elliott’s devotion to helping him. With his friendship with the stranger facing a heartbreaking fate, Elliott works tirelessly to aid E.T.’s attempts to call home.
2. ‘Bond. James Bond’
James Bond (Sean Connery) – Dr. No
A man who likes his martinis shaken not stirred, James Bond is so in tune with cool he can even make introductions suave. Inspiring thousands of viewers to try their hand at mimicking his delivery they were undoubtedly met with vacant expressions. Best leave it to the secret agents who have a license to kill anyone who doesn’t appreciate the effort.
1. ‘May the Force be with you’
Hans Solo (Harrison Ford) – Star Was Episode IV: A New Hope
Could it have been anything else? From one of the most famous movie franchises ever, this line has united Star Wars and movie fans alike for decades. Hans Solo may not have had the Jedi power to foresee the power his line would have on the movie community but it remains a classic to this day. It also inspired people to celebrate National Star Wars day on May the fourth (be with you – badoomtsh).
