It’s confession time. Whilst the world flocked to cinemas to behold the wonder of Peter Jackson’s powerful Lord of the Rings trilogy I sat at home determined to read the books first.
Now, before there’s a backlash from the trilogy’s legions of movie fans, in my defense I was only 13 when the first film came out; I was stubborn and as the years wore on the fact that I hadn’t seen the films became more of an anecdote than a life choice.
I’m one of the few who failed to get caught up in LOTR hysteria. I’ve stood firmly in the Potter camp since I first set eyes on JK Rowling’s output (at the tender age of 10 when I was still capable of believing my Hogwarts acceptance letter would be winging its way to me on my 11th birthday), but it’s time to see what I’ve been missing…
Now, over ten years later and in the run-up to the release of The Hobbit (a book I have actually read), I’m going to embark on a Lord of the Rings mission. I will embark on a journey to Middle Earth (metaphorically as I’m not entirely convinced it’s a real place as of yet), first via J.R.R. Tolkien’s three books, followed swiftly by the hugely popular films. Not only will this allay the shock caused by never having seen them but it will quell my curiosity.
Here you will find me rambling on about my thoughts as and when I visit Middle Earth. Feel free to join me on my journey or simply chuckle at my silly predictions… there’s just one rule: NO SPOILERS PEOPLE!
