Actor Jason Flemyng appears to have accidentally let slip that Matthew Vaughn has been confirmed to direct the seventh Star Wars film. The Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels star was being interviewed at the premiere of new crime comedy Seven Psychopaths when he gave the game away.
Rumours concerning who will be chosen to helm the new Star Wars project have been flying ever since the recent takeover of Lucasfilm by Disney in a $4.05bn deal earlier this month. English writer, producer and director Matthew Vaughn has been at the top of the list since the very beginning, but there has been no official confirmation of any kind from the people at the top.
When asked by film website Hey U Guys if he had discussed Star Wars with Vaughn, Flemyng replied:
“Me and Matt have done nine films together, so I’m sure I’ll get the call for Star Wars.”
Flemyng then seemed to quickly realise that he might have said too much…
Since Vaughn and Flemyng know each other so well, it seems likely that the actor would be privy to at least some of the goings-on. However, he may know no more than the rest of us (which is that Vaughn is very definitely leading the pack of possible directors) and simply have been speculating/joking/making amusing chit-chat with an interviewer.
Still, even a bit of idle chit-chat can quickly become big news when it has something to do with Star Wars. Possibly the biggest and longest-running cult film franchise in cinema history, the Star Wars series has the power to catapult certain film fans into a delightfully geekish frenzy. The appearance of the three prequel films was greeted with what can only be called hysteria, and with three more sequels apparently on the way, it’s far from being over yet.
Original actors Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have all expressed interest in returning to the franchise, and rumours suggest that we can expect Episode VII on our screens in 2015.
