Fans of the recent fairy tale renaissance will be glad to hear that the wait for their next instalment of magical mayhem will not be a long one. Universal Studios have opted to fast-track the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, which is quickly becoming one of this summer’s biggest blockbusting hits.
With a US opening weekend gross of over $55 million, it’s hardly surprising that the studio have been so quick to green light a follow-up. Stars Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth have both been optioned for a further two films and it looks as though the story of Snow White and her Huntsman is far from over.
Universal has commissioned David Koepp, best known for his work on Jurassic Park (1993), Mission: Impossible (1996) and Spider-Man (2002) to write the screenplay. Currently the plan is to pick up where the first film left off, with Snow White now Queen after defeating the evil Ravenna (Charlize Theron) in the first film.
Nothing is yet known about the specifics of the plot, but it would be a pretty safe bet to suggest that we will see a bit more of the romance between Snow White and the Huntsman that was hinted at in the first film (but never explicitly referenced on-screen). It also seems likely that Snow White will have to choose between the Huntsman and her childhood sweetheart William (Sam Claflin), probably while trying to defeat an evil invading force of some type.
There has already been some speculation about whether or not the Dwarves will be featured in the sequel. Despite being played by a host of British favourites (Nick Frost, Ray Winstone and Bob Hoskins to name a few), they were somewhat underused in the first film, and turned into a bit of a joke by the final reel. If the characters reappear in the sequel, it is to be hoped that Koepp will make better use of them.
Rupert Sanders is slated to return as director and the film has been tentatively titled Snow White and the Huntsman 2, but as yet there is no news on when the project will go into production.
